There are many accounts of extraordinary behavior by elephants that appear to indicate higher cognitive abilities. Unfortunately, many of these accounts do not contain adequate background and detail to judge whether they represent examples of conscious intelligence. For this reason we have decided to establish a place on ElephantVoices for the collection of rare elephant observations, particularly those that appear to indicate higher cognitive capacity.
We welcome any observations that you think might be of interest. If you do submit observations please include as much of the following information as possible: your name, occupation, biological background, date and place of observation, in what capacity you observed the behavior (ethologist, elephant trainer, mahout, tourist, etc), how much experience you have with elephants, and social context of the behavior. Detailed notes and photographs are the most valuable. Please also note whether you would like to have your observations available on ElephantVoices for others to read.
