A male succeeding in placing his forelegs on a female's back. Mounting may be successful (intromission and ejaculation occur) or unsuccessful. A successful mating largely depends on a female Standing rather than moving forward. (117a) Mounting may also be seen in between two males during sparring activities (117b) and between playful calves (117c). In addition, elephants have been seen to mount a dead elephant, possibly in an attempt to rouse her (117d). Mounting in each context appears to be a male activity.
