What Elephants Communicate

Vocal Signals Database

Elephants vocalize in a wide range of situations. They call to advertise physiological or hormonal state, to warn or threaten, to demonstrate strong emotions, to announce needs or desires, to propose, negotiate or discuss a plan of action, to coordinate group movement, to secure group defence, to care for calves, to elicit care or support, to reinforce bonds between family and friends, to reconcile differences, and to assert dominance. Elephants communicate with one another using over 70 different call types.

The substantial collection of elephant vocalizations is a core part of ElephantVoices, and when analyzed according to appropriate methodology selections of the material and descriptions will be made available online.

The collection will contain:

  • Name of each call;
  • Description of each call;
  • Sample spectrograms of each call,
  • Sample audio files for each call;
  • Photograph and/or video of an elephant's posture while vocalizing;
To get an idea of what the collection database eventually will consist of check the samples below. Be aware that the audio files are in compressed MP3 format - in a quality we are not very happy about. Because of the low frequency elements elephant vocalizations are a special challenge when it comes to technical solutions and playback on the low quality speakers we often find inside or connected to computers. The future ElephantVoices Database© will include selected high quality recordings, but good speakers will always give you a much better experience!
