In professional zoos elephants have round-the-clock health-care, but they live in totally unnatural environments, under physical and psychological conditions that are impossible for an animal as large and as socially complex as an elephant to fully adapt to. The consequences of such living conditions are often the development of chronic health and behavioural problems.
